So much is often at stake in a long term relationship: powerful feelings, commitments, finances, even
children!  Because of the tremendous stakes and potentially life-changing decisions involved, couples
therapy should include careful consideration of all aspects of the situation as a plan for change is
developed. Yet also, there is tremendous pressure for rapid change before fear becomes hopelessness
and a preemptive decision is made to end the hurt before change can be attempted.

Hurt feelings, betrayal, even substance abuse are
problems that have answers. Change is possible and the
experience of many therapists and couples alike is that
many couples are able to utilize therapy to build a new
foundation to their relationship that surpasses their old
one and creates a stronger bedrock for future growth.
So what happens in couples therapy?

Couples meet with the therapist typically together
and occasionally one-to-one to implement change
techniques drawn from a wide-range of therapy strategies
and customized to their specific situation. Brief therapy
techniques such as solution-oriented therapy or the
science-based strategies evolved by John Gottman, Ph.D. are important sources.  All therapies are
integrated within the context of the couple's relationship as a whole including whatever is valued by each
person.

Counseling is respectful of each client's religious faith, cultural background, and values.  Specialized
plans are created for the most difficult situations including infidelity, past abusive behavior, or blended
family issues.  While many if not most difficulties can be resolved, when they cannot, a central goal of
therapy would be to end the relationship respectfully especially in those situations where co-parenting of
children will remain a vital area of cooperation.
